The characters of Last Man on Earth can't seam to get any break.
Now that Mike, Tandy's brother is back, you'd think that things would stay chill for at least a minute. I realize this is impossibly in a television series, but man, do the writers of this show know to turn things around with every episode. Just as we've began to get accustomed to Mike and his brotherly ways, something had to pop up to mess things up.
But before we get there, let's see how things actually look at the moment.
Carol is finally pregnant with Tandy's baby, after trying to conceive one with Mike, due to low sperm count from Tandy. Todd is dating both Melissa and Gail, though at the moment, he's more upset with Tandy for having been ignored him as a friend, not that Mike is around. It all started when Tandy asked Todd to be the sperm donor for his baby and he said yes, only to have Tandy change his mind at the last minute, and give the honor to Mike. Ever since, Todd has been throwing little tantrums, which got worse this episode.
Meanwhile, Mike has been trying to find his way and of course, that usually means finding a possible mate from the pool of mates. The only woman available at the moment is Erica, the Australian chick who is also pregnant. We didn't really know much about Erica up to this point. Her name is actually Amanda, as she innocently explains, along with the story of having been arrested for armed robbery, served time, and then got a job at the U.S. State Department, where she lied about her identity. She was Amanda Williams, a very American young woman who loves her sorority. When a delighted and shocked Mike asks if anyone else knows about it, Erica gave a straight forward and revealing answer: “They never asked me,” she says. “They just latched onto the Australia thing and stopped right there.” She’s not wrong as we're proven by Tandy's entrance into the room while yelling something about dingos and babies. So, yes, Mike and Erica are hitting it off, but taking it slow.
Both the romance and Todd's jelousy issues are interrupted by a piece of harsh reality: the cow is dead. The only explanation for this is that Mike is sick, infected with the virus. He has been coughing in the last few days and he's been seen with the cow. Tandy tries to reject this theory, but eventually faces the cold truth. However, unlike the rest of the crew, he's not ready to let his brother go, so he first insists that Mike has a cold, but then, when he admits to the weirdness of coughing out blood, he convinces everybody to let him stay, as long as he's quarantined. That is how Mike ends up in a plastic igloo, in the middle of the living room while all the folks wear sterile costumes.
For a while, Tandy's plan works like a charm. The crew even gets to spend some more quality time playing charades and Mike and Erica even get to have a second date which ends with a plastic-mediated kiss. But the crew isn't as opened to Mike's potential infection, so they move to a different house.
“I thought I had lost him forever,” Phil tells everyone. “What are the chances? The entire world dies? There’s seven of us? And my brother shows up? That is not a coincidence. I said goodbye to him once. I’m not going to do it again. He has a friggin’ cold.”
So, Tandy stays and sleeps next to the igloo, close to this long, lost brother. But, in the mornings, he wakes up to find Mike gone, with a little note left behind. “So long, Phil,” it reads. “Didn’t want you to have to say goodbye again…”
Sad, but true.
It's funny though, apart from the that crazy man Mike met on the way to Tucson, we haven't really hear much about the virus, Where did it come from? What's its deal? Perhaps this will open up a whole new layer of plots.
Looking forward to the next episode.
