Despite having been critiqued even before its release for having too much CGI, The BFG directed by three-time Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg is building enough positive buzz. That said, a brand new trailer has been released after the movie made its début at the Cannes Film Festival. The new clip shows plenty of footage of the friendly giant and his budding friendship with his tiny new friend.
Starring Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, The Other Boleyn Girl) as the title character (in a motion-capture performance) and newcomer Ruby Barnhill, the film is based on Roald Dahl’s 1982 children’s book of the same name. The script was written by the late Melissa Mathison (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Black Stalion), who previously collaborated with Spielberg on E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The cast also includesPenelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall and Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live).
Dahl’s novel was first published in 1982 and has been enchanting readers of all ages ever since. Dahl’s books, which also include “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach” and “Matilda,” are currently available in 58 languages and have sold over 200 million copies worldwide. Originally created as a bedtime story, “The BFG” was Dahl’s own favorite of all his stories. (via Comingsoon)
The first trailer focused mainly on Sophie meeting the BFG, but the latest clip shows off some of the perils of the world, where much larger giants roam, as well as a taste of the adventures that they embark on. Naturally, the BFG will easily grow on you as his kind face and words are soothing despite his giant proportions.
“The heart of the story is a love story between two very lonely people, a platonic love story between a kind of grandfather figure and a granddaughter figure made more extreme,” Rylance told Entertainment Weekly about what to expect from the film.
The film is produced by Spielberg, Frank Marshall (Jurassic World, The Bourne Ultimatum) and Sam Mercer(Snow White and the Huntsman, The Sixth Sense) with Kathleen Kennedy (Star Wards: The Force Awakens, Lincoln), John Madden (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Shakespeare in Love), Kristie Macosko Krieger(Bridge of Spies, Lincoln), Michael Siegel (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Rise of the Guardians), Frank Smith and Naia Cucukov serving as executive producers.
The BFG is out on July 1.
